37th Annual McKnight Fellows Meeting
Drs. Curtis Byrd and Rihana Mason will join in a panel discussion entitled: Demystifying Faculty Diversity:Using Academic Pipeline Programs to Overcome Systemic Barriers to Recruitment and Retention. Summary:Recruiting and retaining diverse faculty and staff has always been a challenge, but this panel is focused on showcasing best practices, with a focus on examining successful strategies aimed at improving recruitment efforts for faculty and staff while also working to ensure that campus communities remain inclusive. During this session, we focus on what some institutions are doing right when it comes to not only diversity recruitment but also retention.

Pacific Lutheran University Book Talk / Book Signing
PLU and the Academic Project Pipeline team will be holding a live talk and book signing event on campus at the Pacific Lutheran University located in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Rihana S. Mason will be presenting on the topic of “Supporting Students in Finding Pathways for College and Beyond”, followed by a short Q/A session and book signing event for the Academic Pipeline Programs publication.

Leveraging Academic Pipeline Programs into the Professoriate
The latest women, minorities, and persons with disabilities in science and engineering report (National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, 2021) illustrates that the landscape of the academy is not representative of the diversity of talent despite the years of efforts to increase faculty diversity. This session will highlight the national and institutional implications of diversifying the academy. Renowned thought leaders dialogue with hosts, how academic pipeline initiatives are used, replicated and promoted at the institutional level around the country.

Transitioning from the Bachelors to the Professoriate
Efforts to include talent from all backgrounds at all levels of the educational experience (broadening participation, National Science Foundation, 2017) are expanding the supports given at all levels of the academic experience. Representatives from the Leadership Alliance (collegiate) and Southern Regional Educational Board-Doctoral Scholars Program (graduate) will discuss best practices in positioning students from diverse backgrounds for the progression from college to graduate school.

The Board on Science Education is hosting a committee meeting for the study on the Future of Education Research at the Institute of Education Sciences in the U.S. Department of Education. The committee will hear from multiple stakeholders as part of its effort to understand the diverse needs of the education research field. This project is funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
